CC vs CLI Routes Explained: Which Should You Buy?

Understand the difference between CC and CLI wholesale voice routes, and how to choose the right one for your traffic.

If you're buying wholesale voice termination, you'll see routes labeled CC and CLI. The difference comes down to caller ID delivery and quality — and it directly affects your pricing and answer rates.

CLI routes (premium)

CLI (Calling Line Identification) routes deliver the original caller ID to the called party. They use direct or high-quality interconnects, which means better voice quality, higher ASR (Answer Seizure Ratio), and accurate caller ID — ideal for retail, business, and any traffic where the recipient needs to see who's calling.

  • Caller ID is passed through accurately.
  • Higher and more stable call quality (ASR/ACD).
  • Best for business, retail, and callback use cases.
  • Typically a higher per-minute rate.

CC routes (economy)

CC (Call Center, sometimes 'non-CLI') routes do not guarantee caller ID delivery and often take longer, lower-cost paths. They're cost-effective for high-volume outbound campaigns where caller ID isn't important.

  • Caller ID may be random, withheld, or replaced.
  • Lower cost per minute.
  • Good for high-volume outbound dialing where CLI isn't required.
  • Quality and ASR can vary more than CLI.

Which should you choose?

Use CLI routes whenever the recipient needs to recognize and trust the caller ID, or when call quality is critical. Use CC routes to keep costs down on bulk outbound traffic where caller ID doesn't matter. Many businesses mix both, routing by destination and campaign.
